Rangers Take on Visalia Teen Idol

Teen Idol

On September 9th, 2017, our very own Baylie Teela, Michael Anne De Campos, Niam O’ Donoghue, Victoria Martinez, Haley Ball, Tayler Clifft, and Gracie Cummings will be competing in an annual singing competition for the city of Visalia. These students were chosen through auditions and selected as the top ten finalists out of 40+ kids to compete for the chance to win $300. These auditions took place on July 25th at the Anthony Center.

So what is Visalia Teen Idol? Baylie Teela, ‘18, and Haley Ball, ‘18, said, “It is a singing competition for teens in Visalia. So pretty much you have three songs prepared and you have to perform them. Half of the people get cut from there and they narrow it down to top five then the last and final round narrows it down to three.”

Haley Ball’s younger sister, Shelby Ball, ‘21, who is going to watch the competition said she’s most excited to see who wins. She said that by having a sister in the competition she can go there and watch it every year. It excites her because her sister always sings the songs to her first.

We asked Gracie Cummings, ‘18, and Teela what inspired them to compete in Teen Idol. Cummings said, “I really like to sing and I’ve been singing my entire life.” She has done it before and loved it so she decided to give it another shot. Teela said, “I’ve been singing since I could talk and I’ve always loved performing so I thought this would be a big opportunity. When I first heard about it sophomore year I knew it was something I wanted to do in the future.”

Performing at a public competition could be very nerve-racking to any teenager but these Rangers seemed pretty confident in their planned performances. We asked De Campos what she was most afraid of and she said she was afraid of messing up on the ukulele or guitar because she has to play acoustic. Ball said, “For my third and final song I chose a piano version of Drake’s ‘Just Hold On We’re Going Home’ but I don’t really get nervous on stage because I did it last year. I’m mostly just excited.”

The 14th Annual competition will take place on September 9th in the LJ Williams Theater at 5:30 pm. You can buy your tickets pre-sale from one of the competitors for $7 or at the door for $10. Pre-sale ends around September 1st so get your tickets early so you can support these Rangers in their big competition!
